Place Summit

Place Summit 2024

A treasured ENU tradition, the Place Summit is a time to gather in person with local ENU members and share in the urbanist topics and experiences in one place. Place Summit is a meeting of people with various ages, backgrounds, and experiences who seek interaction with - and motivation from - others who share a passion for place, people, and purpose.

The Place Summit is comprised of multiple locations across the US - each customized to the local Urbanists' tastes and city's areas of interests. This year, ENU members met up in 5 different cities: Atlanta, Washington, DC, Miami, Chicago, and San Francisco. Members toured beautiful neighborhoods, shared presentations on urbanist ideas, and made lasting connections with like-minded professionals.

Why Attend an ENU Place Summit?

Exploring Our Goals

To ENU, the Place Summit and the ideas it generated are catalysts for future involvement. It's the start of encouraging emerging professionals to sit at the table, equipping them through education, and connecting them with other emerging professionals and mentors. The Place Summit also enables emerging professionals within and tangential to the New Urbanist movement to connect with other like-minded professionals and advocates.

Fostering a Thriving Community

What happens when groups of passionate individuals from across the country gather with the opportunity to talk about any and all New-Urbanism-adjacent topics? How can emerging professionals in real estate, planning, urban design, landscape architecture, economics, transportation, and architecture contribute to the ever-evolving movement of New Urbanism? What can come of individuals being inspired by the passion projects, initiatives, and studies of others?

At the ENU Place Summit, inaugurated October of 2021, we ask these questions of ourselves. The takeaways? Education and empowerment. Learning motivates us and exploring inspires us.

Experiencing Great Urbanism

The ENU Place Summit took the presentations and prompts to the streets with walking tours through each of the cities where the Place Summit hubs met - every year in a different location and itinerary. In 2021, the hubs were San Francisco/Berkeley, Chicago, and New Haven. In 2024, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, and Washington DC. Participants enjoy exploring new cities while engaging with other passionate individuals. Discussions continued through afternoon meals, coffee runs, boat tours, and evenings spent in roof-top bars.

An Inspirational Beginning

As ENU's inaugural event, this Place Summit didn't just allow participants to talk about their passions and enjoy a beautiful city. This meeting of minds celebrated the creation of the Emerging New Urbanists and prompted the creation of the ENU Task Force, enabling the community of ENU to continue to expand and welcome emerging professionals from far and wide to join in the movement of New Urbanism.

We learned that in-person connection is essential to building momentum behind the Emerging New Urbanist community. Discussions about person and group goals help us discover our community's next steps. We love new perspectives and attendees. Join us!
