Emerging Urbanists are Contributors

Emerging Urbanists who attend CNU each year lead discussions, share research, and build community. It's our chance to meet up in person, meet new people, expand as an organization, and grow the conversation around Urbanism.

Some Congress activities lead by ENU included:

Session: Congress Orientation Breakfast

ENU hosting the Congress orientation! Geared toward Congress first-timers and/or professionals needing a refresher, this orientation provided an overview of specific verbiage, groups, sessions, and New Urbanist fundamentals that may be challenging to understand as a new attendee. This orientation allowed new-comers to meet and form connections to go through the congress with, while using a fun group activity to teach about common New Urbanist terms and concepts.

Session: Mentorship Huddles

In this interactive session, ENU facilitated an engaging mentorship lunch where emerging and seasoned urbanists had the opportunity to grow their network and share resources. Mentors were able to give career advice and answer questions from emerging professionals, many creating lasting connections.

Session: Relevant Projects

This ENU session has found different forms each CNU. From Pandemic personal projects to Corridor-specific design exercises, this event allowed us to hear and connect over the lesser-known stories of fellow urbanists’ passion projects.

Session: Newest New Urbanists

While hearing advice from the first generation of New Urbanists can be inspiring, the challenges and questions that emerging new urbanists face in their careers are often best understood and answered by those professionals just a handful of years ahead of them. Frequently, understanding the steps and career changes someone else made can inspire us to explore our options as well.

In this session, Emerging New Urbanist leaders from different backgrounds described their career choices and path up to that point. The panel included emerging experts in a range of disciplines, including landscape architects, urban planners, urban designers, real estate developers, and economists. By sharing their career paths and answering questions, these professionals helped guide others as they move forward in their new urbanist careers.
