Emerging professionals are invited to step into the future of urban living with the Emerging New Urbanists at Culdesac, Tempe—a pioneering car-free community. Join ENU and Opticos Design, Inc. on this unique two-day Urban De-Code.
This event will immerse you in the principles of New Urbanism, exploring a space where walkability, sustainability, and community design converge. In addition to hearing exclusive insights from the team who created Culdesac, attendees will explore the built results of Downtown Mesa’s Form-Based Code, enjoying zoning reform in action.
What to expect?
Saturday, Nov 2, 2024
9:00 am - 10:00 am: Breakfast/Coffee at Aruma Cafe
Start the day with coffee and breakfast at Aruma, where Emerging New Urbanists will gather for an informal networking session before the tour.

10:00 am - 12:30 pm: Tour of Culdesac, led by Dan Parolek
Explore the car-free community of Culdesac.
Learn about the planning, design, and development process from the team behind this innovative project.
12:30 pm - 2:30 pm: Catered Lunch and Workshop
Location: Outdoor Plaza in Culdesac
Members of the Culdesac team, including Dan Parolek from Opticos Design, will host a workshop reflecting on lessons learned from the project.
Enjoy a catered lunch (included with purchase of ticket) while the team discusses design processes and answers questions.
2:45 pm: Travel to Downtown Mesa
Take the Lightrail from Smith-Martin/Apache Blvd to Country Club/Main St (14-minute ride, available every 20 minutes).
3:00 pm - 5:30 pm: Tour of Downtown Mesa’s Form-Based Code Projects
Walking tour starts at Country Club/Main St and covers various Form-Based Code (FBC) projects along Main Street, S MacDonald, and S Hibbert.
Led by Mesa planners and featuring insights from local architects on the built results of the FBC in downtown Mesa.
The walking route will take approximately 2 hours, covering notable areas along the way Map of walking route
5:30 pm: Dinner at Republica Empanada Restaurant
End the night with Emerging New Urbanists dining together at Republica Empanada, a local favorite known for its Latin American empanadas and dishes. Dinner will be at your own expense.

Dan Parolek is an architect, urban designer, and the founding principal of Opticos Design, which has grown into a nationally sought-after company of thought leaders in urban placemaking, innovative housing design and policy, and zoning reform. Dan coined the term Missing Middle Housing and is a champion of the now-international Missing Middle Housing movement.
